Philip Weisfelder , MD, SFHM, FACP, is board-certified internal medicine physician with The Christ Hospital – Hospitalist/Nocturnists. He provides inpatient care only to current patients at The Christ Hospital. He has more than 20 years of experience as a hospitalist.
Dr. Weisfelder pursued his career in medicine because he saw it as an opportunity to pursue his interests in problem solving. However, he quickly realized that practicing medicine would allow him to do much more. “To do my best I needed to be a practitioner, a teacher, a mentor, a problem solver, an advocate, a researcher, a leader, a collaborator, and a fellow human being,” he says.
The patient and their family are at the center of Dr. Weisfelder’s approach to providing care. “Specifically, I try to determine each person's and their family's hopes, goals, and preferences,” he says. “Then I try to collaboratively recommend effective treatments based on those goals.” He advocates for patients to actively participate in their own care, and to question things that they don’t understand. He urges patients and their families to provide important history, context, observations and concerns that are vital to comprehensive care. He also reminds people to discuss their medical preferences with their families and to designate a power of attorney for finances and medical purposes when they are healthy. This will ease the burden on loved ones in the event of serious illness.
Dr. Weisfelder earned a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and his Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at The Christ Hospital and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a senior fellow with the Society of Hospital Medicine and a fellow with the American College of Physicians.
When not providing care, Dr. Weisfelder enjoys swimming, cooking, and spending time with his family.
