About pulmonary hypertension (PH)

When the arteries of the lungs become narrow—because of disease or certain health conditions—the heart has to work harder. As the lower right chamber of the heart strains to pump blood to the lungs, blood pressure in the pulmonary (lung) arteries rise, causing high blood pressure in the lungs. PH is often not diagnosed in a timely manner because its early symptoms can be confused with those of many other conditions. PH is a disease that affects people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

Symptoms of PH may include:

  • Breathlessness or shortness of breath, especially with activity

  • Chest pain, especially during physical activity

  • Fainting

  • Feeling tired all the time

  • Lightheadedness, especially when climbing stairs or upon standing up

  • Swollen ankles, legs or abdomen
