Surgical Tradition and Innovation Continues

These innovative surgeries were first done at The Christ Hospital and made possible by our long history of collaboration:

  • The first mechanical kidney, a forerunner of today’s hemodialysis units, in 1951.
  • The first to use balloon angioplasty to open clogged arteries without surgery, in 1980.
  • The first ceramic hip replacement in the nation, in 1982.
