About Travis W. Wheeler, MD

Travis Wheeler, MD, is a board-certified physician who specializes in Family Medicine with The Christ Hospital Physicians – Primary Care. He provides care to patients of all ages at the Montgomery location.

Dr. Wheeler comes from a family with multiple nurses, so his interest in medicine comes naturally. “Their dedication to and love of their careers, along with my own curiosity and fascination with the science of the human body, and a desire to help others inspired my pursuit of a career in medicine,” he says.

He is a strong advocate for equality in healthcare who believes everybody should have access to compassionate, welcoming, non-judgmental, and affirming care. He approaches care for each individual with a goal of establishing a relationship built on mutual honesty and trust where patients can feel safe and comfortable sharing their stories, concerns, or questions in order to provide a better understanding of their unique needs.

Dr. Wheeler values teamwork in the care setting. That includes coordinating with other physicians, members of the office staff, support resources, and most importantly, the patients themselves. “Patients and I share the same goal of improving and maintaining their health,” he says. “The best way to achieve that is to be aligned through open communication and to work together.”

He encourages his patients to remember to be kind to themselves. “Life is filled with challenges, and sometimes the most important thing to do is to give yourself some grace,” he says. He also reminds them that it’s OK to laugh if it helps them to navigate uncomfortable situations – including challenging discussions when seeing him for care. “Sometimes laughter really is the best medicine,” he says.

Dr. Wheeler earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University, and his Medical Degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Wright State University. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians.

In his free time, Dr. Wheeler finds time to relax through photography and reading fiction. He is an active member of his church where he serves as co-leader of the LGBTQ+ Ministry, and a member of the Social Justice Ministry. He loves spending time with his husband exploring new restaurants, spending time outdoors while kayaking or hiking, visiting zoos, enjoying all things Disney, and spoiling their dogs.
