Santiago Garcia, MD, FSCAI, is an interventional cardiologist with The Christ Hospital Physicians – Heart and Vascular in Cincinnati, Ohio. He specializes in structural heart disease, valvular heart disease, congenital heart disease, minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and transcatheter repair of congenital heart defects, and cardiovascular clinical research.
Dr. Garcia developed a passion for medicine as a young man working with underserved communities in Argentina. Taking care of people with medical issues came very naturally to him. In medical school, he quickly became drawn to the heart and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives through cardiovascular care.
After completing extensive medical training, Dr. Garcia’s first professional role as a cardiologist was at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. He spent nearly a decade there caring for veterans and established the center’s structural heart program. Prior to joining The Christ Hospital, Dr. Garcia was a staff interventional cardiologist with the Minneapolis Heart Institute where he served as Medical Director of the Transcatheter Aortic and Congenital Structural Program.
Dr. Garcia earned his medical degree at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Miami, where he served as chief medical resident. He completed fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Garcia is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, and Endovascular Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI). He was a fellow (2017-2019) of the Emerging Leadership Mentorship (ELM) Program sponsored by the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC).
Dr. Garcia’ has published more than 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed medical journals and has received research support from government entities, philanthropic agencies and industry. He has also served as a reviewer for a number of medical journals including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Chest, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the American Heart Journal, Heart, and JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions.
Dr. Garcia and his wife, who is also cardiologist, have two children. Outside of medicine, he enjoys travel, running, and tennis.
