Orthopedic Surgeon at The Christ Hospital Health Network Returns from Traveling Fellowship Across North America

Fellowship Took Place in Several Cities in the United States and Canada

CINCINNATI (May 16, 2023) – Dinesh Thawrani, MD, orthopedic surgeon at The Christ Hospital Health Network, recently returned from the Hip Society Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship. The annual fellowship is open to just four orthopedic surgeons from around the world and invites them to visit eight centers across North America: six in the United States and two in Canada.

“I am honored to be the only orthopedic joint replacement surgeon chosen from the entire United States for this extremely reputed traveling fellowship program,” said Thawrani. “Traveling throughout North America while learning from some of the best minds in orthopedic surgery was an opportunity of a lifetime. This incredible experience offered the chance to interact with some of the best joint replacement surgeons in the world while allowing me to hone my skills and bring them back to my patients in Cincinnati.”

Dr. Thawrani had opportunities to expand his knowledge and learn about new technologies including robotic systems, artificial intelligence, pre-op 3D modeling procedures and various high-tech computer science technologies in total hip and knee replacement surgeries. Different centers taught the traveling fellows new surgical techniques for joint replacements and developed partnerships in future research projects with a number of international centers.

Some of the centers Dr. Thawrani visited included:

•The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota

•Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY

•The Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

•Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri

•University California San Francisco, San Francisco, California

•Joint Implant Surgeons, Columbus, OH

•The Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa, Canada

•London Health Sciences Center, London, Ontario, Canada

The goal of the fellowship is to foster emerging thought leaders and provide them with an inspirational tour of state-of-the-art facilities throughout North America that provide exemplary surgical care of the hip joint. Those that take part in the traveling fellowship often share information, research and networking across the globe.

Dr. Thawrani joined The Christ Hospital Health Network’s world-class orthopedic surgical program in 2022. A board-certified orthopedic surgeon and associate professor at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, Dr. Thawrani specializes in knee and hip replacement, fracture care, and arthritis of the knee and hip joints.
