CINCINNATI (January 21, 2025) – Research conducted at The Christ Hospital Health Network shows that patients with shoulder arthritis and bone loss have improved function after shoulder replacement. The study, recently published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, comes from a collaborative effort from The Christ Hospital, the Cincinnati Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship and the Carl and Edyth Lindner Research Center.
Advanced shoulder arthritis is frequently associated with socket, or glenoid, bone loss. This creates a treatment challenge for physicians when patients need shoulder replacement surgery. The study reported the five-year clinical and radiographic outcomes for a special type of socket replacement (all polyethylene posteriorly augmented glenoid component) in total shoulder replacement surgery.
The research confirmed that patients had improvements in pain reduction and better overall shoulder function five years or longer post-surgery. During the trial, patients had maintained functional improvement without the need for additional surgeries.
“This cutting-edge technology shows the innovation that The Christ Hospital Health Network, through the Carl and Edyth Lindner Research Center, can provide to patients, not just in Cincinnati but across the country, suffering with shoulder pain related to arthritis,” said Paul Favorito, MD, an orthopedic shoulder surgeon at The Christ Hospital Health Network and one of the lead authors of the study. “This research expands upon a previously published study of patients with two years of follow up. Our research team will continue to follow the patients to answer the questions that they all ask; how long will my shoulder replacement last?”
Dennis DeBernardis, DO, of the Cincinnati Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, Dave Donnelly, PA-C, and Aditya Bahel, DO, radiologist, were instrumental in conducting research for the study.
