Inpatient mental health at The Christ Hospital

Some behavioral health issues require hospitalization. If you or a loved one are in the midst of a mental health crisis that requires more support than that found in outpatient therapy, the compassionate professionals at The Christ Hospital provide round-the-clock care to stabilize your symptoms and begin your recovery process.

Our inpatient mental health unit is licensed by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (ODMHAS), which means our expert, interdisciplinary team is prepared to handle a wide range of issues in adults and seniors, like anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, and suicidal thoughts and actions.

Safety and confidentiality are our priorities. The doors leading into the unit are kept locked at all times and designated public areas are monitored with video surveillance. Staff members will never share your health information without your signed consent.

Inpatient mental health services

Inpatient mental health at The Christ Hospital is specialized. We offer care in units with experienced professionals, including:
  • Adult inpatient mental health unit—focuses on crisis stabilization for people age 18 years and older who have a primary psychiatric diagnosis.

  • Senior adult mental health unit—geared for people age 60 and older who require short-term inpatient psychiatric care. A gerontology team—a nurse practitioner and physician who specializes in senior health—is also available to manage medical care as needed. Patients are typically seen by a NP for ongoing care, but a gerontologist is available for consultation.

  • Behavioral intensive care unit—provides a safe environment and therapeutic services for people with high-level mental health needs.

Our adult and senior inpatient mental health teams provide:

  • Diagnosis

  • Evaluation

  • Intervention

  • Interdisciplinary assessment

  • Referrals as needed

Inpatient mental health services are individualized to meet the specific needs of each patient and may involve individual and group activities such as:

  • Art therapy—using art and creativity to express thoughts and emotions.

  • Family therapy—counseling that works with the family as a group to help improve their ability to communicate, interact, and resolve conflict.

  • Group therapy—working through feelings and issues with a therapist and a group of people going through similar challenges to gain insights, change perceptions, and give and receive support.

  • Individual therapy—one-one-one counseling with a mental health professional.

  • Recreational therapy—games, sports, and other activities designed to promote healing.

  • Medication management—ensures the correct dosage of the correct medication is prescribed.

  • Milieu therapy—structured activities and interactions that focus on effective ways to handle life’s challenges.
