Sydney Schacht, DO, is a board-certified physician who specializes in pulmonary medicine. She treats patients of The Christ Hospital Physicians – Pulmonary Medicine at the Mt. Auburn, Springfield Township, Montgomery, and Batesville locations.
Dr. Schacht developed an interest in medicine at a young age. She began volunteering at a local hospital in high school and spent a total of 12 years there as a volunteer and later an employee. She credits the doctors and nurses there with nurturing her interest and providing the foundation for her career.
She takes great honor in being given the trust and responsibility of taking part in her patients’ healthcare journey. She says the best part of her job is really getting to know her patients over time. The focus of her approach to care is to relate to each as an individual and to always put their unique needs first.
“Sometimes a pulmonary appointment becomes less about lung disease and more about other aspects of life, some good, some bad,” Dr. Schacht says. “It's important to remember the human aspect of care and that my agenda is not necessarily that of the patient. Sitting and listening is often more therapeutic than medications and procedures.” She also reminds her patients that they know their body better than anybody, and of the importance of being their own advocate.
Dr. Schacht earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado and her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at The University of Cincinnati where she served as Chief Resident and completed fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Indiana University, where she was recognized by the Sunnyside Guild for humanism and inter-personal skills. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine for internal medicine and pulmonary medicine and is a member of American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
When not providing care, Dr. Schacht enjoys reading, hiking, spending time with friends and family, trying new foods, and cooking.
