The Christ Hospital Health Network First-in-the-Region to Use Groundbreaking Da Vinci Single Port Robot

Robot Will Be Used for Minimally Invasive Urology Surgery

CINCINNATI (July 31, 2024) – The Christ Hospital Health Network is the first hospital system in the region to use the Da Vinci Single Port (SP) robotic surgical system, marking a groundbreaking advancement in minimally invasive surgery for Urology.

The Da Vinci SP system is uniquely designed for single-incision, revolutionizing patient outcomes by reducing hospital stays and accelerating recovery times. Unlike traditional multi-port robotic systems, the SP robot enables procedures to transition from a 2 to 4-day hospital stay to outpatient status, allowing most patients to return home the same day as their surgery.

“Our introduction of the Single Port robotic system represents a significant advancement in minimally invasive surgery,” said Justin Cox, MD, Urologist at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “This technology allows us to offer our patients unparalleled precision, faster recovery times and better outcomes, positioning us at the forefront of surgical innovation in Cincinnati.”

Dr. Cox is the first and only physician in the region trained to perform single port Da Vinci robotic surgeries. He and colleague Anish Shah, MD were both recently named among Newsweek's top prostate cancer surgeons.

The Da Vinci SP robot joins The Christ Hospital's esteemed fleet of robotic systems. These systems are integral to performing a wide range of complex surgeries across various specialties, all controlled by skilled surgeons at console workstations that offer enhanced visualization and maneuverability beyond human capability. In addition to its immediate impact in urology, the SP robot holds promise for future applications in ENT procedures, broadening the scope of minimally invasive surgical options.

“The extension of our robotic surgery program with the Da Vinci Single Port system underscores our commitment to providing the highest level of care and innovation for to help our patients heal more quickly,” added Debbie Hayes, President & CEO at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “These advancements not only enhance the precision of our surgical procedures but also significantly improve patient recovery and outcomes, affirming our dedication to leading the way and advance our mission to improve the health of the community and create even more value for the patients and the community that we serve.”
