See Christ Hospital's New Level III NICU

​​​The Christ Hospita​​l has a newly remodeled Level Three NICU! This is a big deal for families expecting high risk pregnancies — as a Level Three NICU means: “It has some of the best technology available to provide the neurodevelopment that that baby's going to need to help them grow,” according to Nurse Clinical Manager, Amy Robinson, who answered some of my questions and took me on a tour! Check out what I learned!

Can you explain the remodel of the NICU?

I asked Amy Robinson, RN, to explain what Christ Hospital did for the remodel: “they did a complete rebuild of the nursery. So, we went from a Level 2 to a Level 3 and that was official in January. So, to prepare for that, they redid the entire unit. We have state-of-the-art technology, noise cancelling floors, cyclical lighting that rises and falls with the sun.” Nurse Amy gave me a tour of the NICU while we talked and YES, the floors are truly noise cancelling! You couldn’t hear a thing! I learned how important this is for babies in such early stages of development — not to mention how helpful it is for moms too!

The new remodel of the Level Three NICU was inspired by the Cincinnati Zoo. Nurse Amy says, “They collaborated with the zoo. So, the head walls, each room has an animal, and that particular animal at the zoo painted a picture for us. My personal favorite is the Elephant Bay, just because I have a fondness for elephants. It's our triplet Bay.” I think the artwork in the NICU created a sense of comfort and peace. I can remember my sister giving birth to my nephew two months early and it was a scary time for her family. The NICU is the first home for many babies — it should feel like it!

What would you tell a family expecting a stay in the NICU?

Nurse Amy says, “The three things that I would tell a mom that was anticipating a high-risk pregnancy is that the Level 3 NICU at the Christ Hospital can provide that higher level of care so that mom and baby aren't separated. The Level 3 NICU has some of the best technology available to provide the neurodevelopment that that baby's going to need to help them grow. And I'm quite partial to my staff and I would say we have the best staff around. I think that families would be happy to find out that we have collaborated with the neonatologists from Cincinnati Children's to offer topnotch care.”
