MD Insider provides a unique inside look into medical conditions and treatments to uncover ground-breaking advances that are truly transforming healthcare. The series features insight from acclaimed cardiologist, Dean Kereiakes, MD, breaking down exciting innovations and treatments available right here in the Tristate.
In this episode, Dr. Kereiakes and host Clyde Gray are joined by Robert Pelberg, MD, and James Jollis, MD, to talk about HeartFlow - a new technology introduced to the Tristate by The Christ Hospital to better predict the degree of blood flow reduction to the heart caused by coronary artery blockages.
Dr. Kereiakes: HeartFlow is an incredible advance in our ability to non-invasively and more accurately determine the severity of blockages in the arteries to the heart. When applied to a coronary CT angiogram, this technology can tell us exactly how severe a blockage is and if the blockage significantly reduces blood flow to the heart. With HeartFlow, our patients can avoid experiencing additional invasive testing that may be associated with complications. The Christ Hospital is the first to bring this exciting technology to patients in the Tristate.
Dr. Pelberg: Although CT angiograms can identify blockages in the coronary arteries, they are not very good at telling us the functional significance of those blockages. HeartFlow can answer the question: does this blockage need to be fixed? HeartFlow uses the CT angiogram to calculate a fractional flow reserve, or CT-FFr. The CT-FFr tells us whether it’s best to treat a specific blockage with medications or if revascularization with a stent or even bypass surgery might be needed. Using the HeartFlow technology significantly improves the accuracy of the CT angiogram.
