Position Statement

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Program Overview

PGY1 residents will be an integral part of the medication use process at The Christ Hospital. The residency will serve to help the resident develop a secure understanding of the clinical, distributive, and administrative aspects of hospital pharmacy. Through a variety of required and elective learning experiences, residents will gain confidence to effectively function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Additionally, the program will focus on developing and refining the resident's writing, presentation, teaching, research, and leadership skills.

Learning Experiences

Required Learning Experiences (1 month each):

  • Ambulatory Selective†: Medical Resident Clinic, Primary Care, Cardiology Clinic, Oral Oncolytic Clinic

  • Antimicrobial Stewardship

  • Cardiology Selective†: General or Heart Failure

  • Clinical Pharmacy Management

  • Critical Care Selective†: Medical ICU or Cardiovascular ICU

  • Emergency Medicine*

  • Internal Medicine*

  • Orientation

† Selective rotations off the resident the opportunity to choose between a number of rotations that meet the requirement​

Elective Learning Experiences (1 month each, choose 3): 

  • Academic

  • Infectious Diseases

  • Neonatal ICU

  • Oncology

  • Palliative Care

  • Transplant (Kidney or Heart)

  • Any Selective rotation not chosen as required

  • Advanced repeat of any of the above required or elective rotations designated with an *

Teaching Opportunities:

  • Optional University of Cincinnati Teaching Certificate Program

  • Presentation of a Therapeutic Controversy

  • Numerous opportunities to conduct informal teaching with nurses, physicians, and students​​

Pharmacy Residency Application

The Christ Hospital residency program participates in the ASHP Resident Matching Program and utilizes the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS).  Applicants to the PGY-1  Residency Program are required to provide the following through PhORCAS:

  • Letter of intent

  • Curriculum vitae

  • Basic demographic information

  • Verified transcripts

  • Three references on standardized reference template in PhORCAS

  • Extracurricular information

Supplemental materials required by The Christ Hospital:

  • Please answer the following questions and submit through Phorcas.  Answers should be no more than 2 pages in total (approximately ½ page per answer). 

    • Describe your proudest lifetime achievement/accomplishment.

    • Describe a time you made a substantial impact on a patient's care.

    • What career would you pursue if you were not in pharmacy and why?

    • Describe three things that make you happy and why.

  • Photograph taken during on site interview

Applicant Eligibility Criteria:                    

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited Doctor of Pharmacy degree program

  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure, in the state of Ohio

  • Meets criteria for employment at The Christ Hospital, including vaccination requirements and a negative drug and tobacco screen

  • US citizen or legal resident
