Structural Heart Disease Fellowship

The Christ Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute sponsors a one-year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship in structural heart disease (SHD). The fellowship provides experience in the interventional management of structural and adult congenital heart disease patients with a special focus on transcatheter interventions.

Applicants must have completed general cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowships.

Case Experience and Responsibilities

Fellows will participate in the full spectrum of transcatheter procedures including aortic, mitral, tricuspid, pulmonic, closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects, coronary sinus, left ventricular remodeling and left atrial appendage interventions.

As they gain experience, fellows are expected to transition from secondary to primary operators, usually during the second half of their training. SHD fellows are assigned to the cardiac catheterization laboratory 3-4 days per week.

SHD fellows are also expected to be active participants in the periprocedural management of these patients, including complication management and post-procedure follow-up.

Fellows spend approximately one day per week in the valve clinic and have clinical responsibilities on the inpatient valve service working alongside APPs and faculty members with emphasis in longitudinal follow-up of patients.

Fellows are expected to participate in faculty-led research, which should culminate in a presentation at a scientific session, publication in peer-reviewed medical journal, or both. Fellows also participate in enrollment and follow-up of patients enrolled into clinical trials at the Linder Research Center
