Several surgeons at The Christ Hospital have received extensive training in robotic-assisted surgery and have performed numerous da Vinci procedures with excellent outcomes.
Gynecologic Surgery
At The Christ Hospital, the da Vinci is used to treat a wide range of gynecologic conditions. In fact, The Christ Hospital peforms more robotic-assisted gynecologic surgeries than any other hospital in the area. Such treatments include:
- Hysterectomy – Surgical removal of the uterus
- Myomectomy – Surgical removal of fibroids, benign tumors on the wall of the uterus
- Treatment of cervical and uterine cancer
- Treatment of endometriosis, a condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus is found growing outside the uterus, causing bleeding and pain
- Treatment of uterine prolapse, a condition in which the uterus has dropped from the pelvis to the vagina
- Treatment of excessive bleeding

The da Vinci helps reduce the amount of pain, trauma and the long recovery process typically associated with traditional hysterectomies and other complex gynecologic procedures.
The following gynecologic surgeons at Christ Hospital currently use the da Vinci:
John Adler, M.D.
-
Areas of Interest: chronic pelvic pain, recurrent abnormal uterine bleeding, failed endometrial ablations, severe pelvic adhesions from previous surgeries and abdominoplasties, and removal of the uterus or ovaries due to chronic infection, endometriosis, or fibroids.
Marcia Bowling, M.D.
- Areas of Interest: Surgery for gynecologic cancers (uterus, cervix, ovary), removal of high risk/complex pelvic masses in patients with complicated medical and surgical histories, and prophylactic surgery for patients with gene mutations putting them at risk for ovarian or uterine cancer.
Jennifer Green, M.D.
- Areas of Interest: Treatment of fibroids (including complex cases), endometriosis, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, adhesive disease and abnormal bleeding. Hystectomies (complex cases and large fibroid uteruses), myomectomies, oophorectomies and sacrocolpopexy. to treat vaginal vault prolapse.
Navkaran Singh, M.D.
- Areas of Interest: Hysterectomies, myomectomies, oophrectomies; treatment of pelvic masses and endometriosis
Urologic Surgery
At The Christ Hospital, the da Vinci is also used as an effective alternative for complex and delicate urologic operations, including prostatectomy. This procedure, used to treat prostate cancer that is confined to one area, involves removal of the prostate gland and some of the surrounding tissue. By using the da Vinci, the surgeon has a better tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance patients’ recovery process and clinical outcomes.

The following urologic surgeons at Christ Hospital currently use the da Vinci:
- John Benedict, M.D.
- Stephen Bennett, M.D.
- Sigmund Sugarman, M.D.
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
At The Christ Hospital, the da Vinci is also used in cardiovascular (heart) and thoracic (chest) procedures, such as:
- Bi-ventricular Lead Placements - Attaching wires to pacemakers or defibrillators to “resynchronize” the heartbeat.
- Harvesting the internal mammary artery in the heart, prior to coronary artery bypass surgery
- Removal of tumors in the chest
- Lung biopsy, or the removal of a small piece of lung tissue. It is used to diagnose lung conditions.
The following cardiovascular surgeons are using the da Vinci at Christ Hospital for these procedures:
- Geoffrey Answini, M.D.
- Steven Park, M.D.
- Manisha Patel, M.D.
